empowered colors, enhanced categories, extended import & export, super drag&drop

Your lists just got a whole lot cooler

Extended Import and Export
It's great to work in Listz, but we understand sometimes you need to share your lists with someone who doesn't have Listz or you just need them in a different format. We have worked very hard on several new Export options. We hope you enjoy them and look forward to seeing lists shared more and more, in all sorts of forms.

Listz can now export a structured XML document for use with other apps. Click here to access a copy of Listz's XML structure documentation. This is a powerful way to share structured data.

Listz can now also export a structured OPML document for use with other apps. Although Listz is not an outliner, OPML is a convenient output format for use in a great many applications. Click here to access a copy of Listz's OPML structure documentation.

Listz also now exports media-rich PDF and RTFD files. These exports take full advantage of all the images, colors, and other helpful visual cues that Listz has to offer.

In addition to being able to export into several new formats, Listz will now accept input in OPML or XML formats.

Listz can now export all these formats

ServicesItem Info panel
Have you ever been browsing a website, or reading a document, and thought to yourself "Hmm, that's interesting, I should write that down"? Or maybe, "I want to come back to that, I should link it". If you have had Listz for a while now you probably just pop it open and do just that. But now Listz now has Services! Listz's services allow you to create Listz items from within other applications; no need to launch Listz or switch out of your current application.

Listz is even smart enough to create a new "Scrapbook" list for all the items you create using services, so you know exactly where they are. To take it one step further, you can have Listz automatically create a new tab for every day that you create items via Services, giving you an easy to navigate history.

Services are available from the application menu item of most Mac applications (e.g. Safari>Services>Listz>Add Item with Link)

Enhanced Categories
Listz's categories are a fast, powerful way to organize, group, sort, and now, search your items. We added several new ways to access and use these great tools.

Now you can directly access an entire set of categories without opening the item info panel. Just like Listz's other pop&click menus, you can now spring open the categories right in your list view. If you know the set well, click forward (or backwards opt+click) to get right to the category you want, or pop the whole set open and navigate visually.

You can now search on category names within the Find/Find in Lists... panel. This is a great way to find all items that you have assigned a certain category to. Just make certain you check the "in Category Names" box when you search.

In version 1.2 you can set a different category set to be the default for any tab! For example, if you have a "School" tab you might want to set the default category to your own custom category set of subjects. Then, any time you create an item on that tab you can instantly select "Physics", "French", "History", etc. without even having to open the item info panel.

Empowered ColorsItem Info panel
We have added quite a few new features that take advantage of the incredible mnemonic power of color. Applying a color to an item is a speedy way to differentiate it from others, but it's also a clear, visual way to see which of your items are similar or share attributes.

With Listz v 1.2 you can create custom colors and custom palettes of colors. When you create a new custom color, you give it a name. It can be anything you like. "Personal" or "Important" or "Cancun" or "Educational" are all useful choices.

To create a single custom color, select "Custom..." from the Color popup in the Item Info panel. It will bring up a small panel where you can pick your color and type in the name you want to use.

Create custom colors to organize visually

Quickly choose colors in the CMMAs we mentioned above, colors now have names. When you apply a color to an item it adds another searchable factor. You can use the "Find in Lists" function to search on any color you have created. When you use the Find/Find in Lists... menu item and be sure to check the box next to "in Color Name".

You can now sort by colors within your tabs. To sort your tab by color just select the palette icon in the Sort Order pop&click at the top of your list. The colors sort based upon their Hue values, so even if you don't have an eye for color it will look well ordered.

Now in version 1.2 you can create your own sets of colors with their own distinct meanings! Imagine you want to make a list of cars. You have already created categories for Sedan, Sports cars, and Trucks, but want to be able to quickly identify, sort, or search for cars made in Japan, Germany, France, etc. Now you can create a custom palette of colors that lets you do exactly that.

Listz comes with 6 Favorites pre-defined for you. You can change the names or colors of these in the Listz/Preferences... Color tab. These colors can be applied to any item through the Item Info panel or the contextual menu.

More Powerful Drag&Drop
We have added several major new drag&drop features. Each is intended to make the process of organizing and arranging your lists that extra bit easier, and a lot more efficient.

You can now drag and drop items directly onto a tab icon (the tabs at the right of your lists) to add them to the end of that tab. This lets you easily move items to another tab in the same list without opening a new window. You can also drag-copy (OPT + drag) items onto a tab icon to make copies of those items in that tab.

You can also move, or copy, an entire tab from one list to another just by dragging and dropping it. Just make the tab you wish to move, or copy, the active tab, then click and drag the active tab to the list you want it in. To copy it rather than moving it hold the OPTION key and drag it (OPT + drag). It couldn't be easier!

You have always been able to instantly export from Listz by dragging items to the desktop, but now you can just as easily import. To import, just drag a Listz file onto a list window. If the file contains only tabs they will be added to that list. If the file contains only items they will be added to the active tab. If the file contains lists they will simply be imported. As the icing on the cake, you can export an entire tab the same way, just drag it off and drop it on the desktop.

UI EnhancementsItem Info panel
There are dozens of new user interface enhancements in the new version 1.2. Everything from new key commands to make creating, navigating, and exploring your lists faster, to a new animation when you switch tabs. This extended animation shows more clearly the tab you clicked moving into the Active Tab position and the old active tab moving back into its proper place. For you Listz pros out there, there are preferences to vary the speed or turn off this new animation.

We have quite a few users who are leveraging the power of Listz into a GTD system. (GTD, or "Getting Things Done" is David Allen's brilliant system for stress-free productivity.) Just for these users we add two new statuses, "Waiting" and "Delegated". Now you can hand off some of your tasks and stay focused on your priorities.

These are just a few highlights of the over 50 enhancements and improvements in the new Listz version 1.2. Download it today and see how enjoyable getting organized can be!
